Audi Q7: A/C System Control and Regulation Components in Vehicle Interior
A/C System Control and Regulation Information
Note
- Depending on vehicle equipment, there are different versions
of the A/C system for the Audi Q7. Make sure to use the correct
version and pay attention to the allocation of different
components. Refer to
→ Chapter "A/C System Versions" and Parts Catalog.
- If there is a malfunction in the A/C system, first check the
DTC memory for the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- (and the
Rear A/C Display Control Head -E265- on a "High" A/C system).
Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding"
function. If a message appears to check the DTC memory of a
different control module, also check the DTC memory of this
control module (for example, the Vehicle Electrical System
Control Module -J519-, the Comfort System Central Control Module
-J393-). Certain A/C system components (such as the A/C
Compressor Regulator Valve -N280-) are not directly activated by
the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- or their measured
values are not directly evaluated by the Head Front A/C Display
Control -E87-. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided
Fault Finding" function.
- If no malfunction is displayed, check the affected measured
values of the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- (and the Rear
A/C Display Control Head -E265-) and activate any potentially
problematic component using the "output diagnostic test mode"
function. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
- The "electrical test" function is not described in this
repair manual. Perform an electrical test via the "Guided Fault
Finding" function. Information can also be found here on the
functions that should be checked. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic
Tester.
- Certain A/C system functions can be switched on and off via
the MMI (Multi Media Interface) in the "A/C system" function
under the "Car"/"Vehicle" menu. The A/C system control can also
be influenced via the presets in the MMI (Multi Media Interface)
under the "A/C system" function in the "Car"/"Vehicle" menu.
Therefore, check the preset in the MMI first in the case there
is a problem with these components. Refer to Infotainment/MMI
Operating Instructions.
- The temperature-dependent resistance values of the various
temperature sensors are recorded in tables, which can be
accessed using the "Guided Fault Finding" function. Refer to
Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
- The electrical test for the various actuators is described
in Guided Fault Finding. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
- Repair work on refrigerant circuit. Refer to
→ Chapter "Refrigerant Circuit".

Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- for A/C System Control and
Regulation
Note
- Depending on vehicle equipment, there are different versions
of the A/C system for the Audi Q7. Make sure to use the correct
version and pay attention to the allocation of different
components. Refer to
→ Chapter "A/C System Versions" and Parts Catalog.
- The Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- cannot currently be
interchanged in the usual way as the component protection is
active. The component protection (anti-theft protection) can
only be canceled by entering specific vehicle data. Refer to
Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in "Guided Fault Finding" function.
- If a Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- with active
component protection (anti-theft protection) is installed in a
different vehicle, the functions necessary for vehicle safety
can still be selected, but the convenience functions can no
longer be selected. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the
"Guided Fault Finding" function.
- When replacing a Front A/C Display Control Head -E87-,
ensure the correct allocation. There are different versions for
vehicles with a "Low"Mid", "Mix" or "High" A/C system, with or
without a button for seat heating and/or seat ventilation, etc.
Refer to the Parts Catalog.
- Pressing the buttons on the Front A/C Display Control Head
-E87- or the Rear A/C Display Control Head -E265- for an
extended period of time (due to an object lying on them, for
example) can result in a fault being stored in the DTC memory
that indicates there are stuck buttons. If necessary, check the
function of the buttons and erase the DTC memory if no
malfunction is found.
- The setting for the seat heating and seat ventilation is
adjusted on the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- (and the
Rear A/C Display Control Head -E265-). This setting is
transmitted via the data bus to the Vehicle Electrical System
Control Module -J519-, for example. The specified temperatures
for the different seat heating and seat ventilation settings are
stored in the Vehicle Electrical System Control Module -J519-.
Depending on the version of the Vehicle Electrical System
Control Module -J519- and the vehicle date of manufacture, the
specified temperature for the seat heating and seat ventilation
may differ with the same setting on the Front A/C Display
Control Head -E87- (and the Rear A/C Display Control Head
-E265-). Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault
Finding" function (for the Vehicle Electrical System Control
Module -J519-). Refer to
→ Chapter "Seat Heating".
- If a new Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- (or Rear A/C
Display Control Head -E265-) was installed and the basic setting
was not performed, the A/C system regulation is limited and will
be displayed as a malfunction in the DTC memory. After
installing the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- (or the Rear
A/C Display Control Head -E265-), perform the A/C system basic setting as specified. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the
"Guided Fault Finding" function.
- Non-replaceable LEDs illuminate the buttons, the display and
the knobs for the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- (and the
Rear A/C Display Control Head -E265-).
- The function indicator lamps in the buttons and in the knobs
for the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- (and the Rear A/C
Display Control Head -E265-) as well as the knobs and buttons
cannot be replaced separately.
- If an incorrect measurement is made by the temperature and
sunlight infrared sensor installed in the Front A/C Display
Control Head -E87-, check the trim of the Front A/C Display
Control Head -E87-. The infrared sensor for temperature and
sunlight must not be taped over or covered. Refer to Vehicle
Diagnostic Tester function.
- The selected functions are indicated by the illumination of
function indicator lamps in the various buttons, knobs or in the
applicable display fields of the Front A/C Display Control Head
-E87- (and the Rear A/C Display Control Head -E265-).
- Depending on the version and setting on the Front A/C
Display Control Head -E87- (and the Rear A/C Display Control
Head -E265-), the functions currently selected are indicated on
the display of the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- and on
the display of the Multi Media Interface (MMI), or only on the
display for the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87-. The
display duration on the MMI display can be adjusted via the
"adaptation" function in Guided Fault Finding for the Front A/C
Display Control Head -E87-. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.
- If no malfunction is stored and a function of the Front A/C
Display Control Head -E87- (or Rear A/C Display Control Head
-E265-) is not available, check the adaptation of the Front A/C
Display Control Head -E87- (and the Rear A/C Display Control
Head -E265-). The function may be switched off due to a setting.
If necessary, reset the adaptations in all adaptation channels
to the manufacturer setting. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.
- If there is a condition where the heating or ventilation for
the driver or front passenger seat cannot be switched on, it is
stored as a malfunction in the Vehicle Electrical System Control
Module -J519- or the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87-
(depending on the vehicle version and vehicle equipment).
Currently for this vehicle, the information that indicates that
the DTC memory in the respective control module or Comfort
System Central Control Module -J393- must be checked, is not
always sent to the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- via the
data bus. Refer to Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided
Fault Finding" function. In the event of a complaint regarding
seat heating or seat ventilation, first check the DTC memory of
the control modules activating the seat heating and seat
ventilation.
- This vehicle has a Start/Stop System for specific engines as
optional equipment. For vehicles with a Start/Stop System, the
Stop function is prevented depending on the setting on the Front
A/C Display Control Head -E87-. If, for example, "defrost" mode
is selected, the Stop function is not possible or is canceled
and the engine is started as soon as this mode is selected. The
same also applies if the difference between the selected
specified temperature and the measured actual temperature
exceeds a certain value in heating and cooling mode. Refer to
Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding"
function.
Vehicles with Parking Heater
- Make sure the Front A/C Display Control Head -E87- is
correctly allocated to the remote control hand-held transmitter
and to the Parking Heater Radio Receiver -R64-. There are
different versions of the remote control hand-held transmitter
and Parking Heater Radio Receiver -R64-. Refer to the Parts
Catalog and Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault
Finding" function.
- Depending on the version of the Front A/C Display Control
Head -E87-, additional parking heater functions may be
controlled. For more information. Refer to the Operating
Instructions and Infotainment/MMI Operating Instructions.
Vehicles with a high-voltage system (hybrid vehicles)
- So that the necessary functions of the Front A/C Display

- Pressing the buttons on the Front A/C Display Control Head
-E87- or the Rear A/C Display Control Head -E265- for an
extended period of time (due to an object lying on them, for
example), can result in a fault being stored in the DTC memory
that indicates there are stuck buttons. If necessary, check the
function of the buttons and erase the DTC memory if no
malfunction is found.
- There are different versions of the Rear A/C Display Control
Head -E265-. Therefore, when replacing a Rear A/C Display
Control Head -E265-, ensure the correct allocation (for vehicles
with a "Mid", "Mix" or "High" A/C system; for vehicles with or
without seat heating and/or seat ventilation buttons, etc.).
Refer to the Parts Catalog.
- For the Rear A/C Display Control Head -E265-, the "component
